Where Growing Comes Naturally
At Hailes Barn, we provide a warm, inclusive environment where every child is valued and supported.
Our flexible, child-led approach nurtures individuality, creativity, and independence.
With a strong emphasis on well-being, safeguarding, and outdoor learning, we inspire curiosity, resilience, and a lasting connection to nature.
Our Groups
Chicks
9 months - 18 months
Just nine children per day with a 1:3 ratio. This small, close-knit environment helps us form strong bonds and adapt our routines to reflect those at home, providing a familiar, caring space for each child.
Hens
18 months – 3 years
Twelve children per day with a mixed ratio group 1:3 until they are 2 years old, and 1:4 from 2 to 3 years. This is lower than the new government guidance of 1:5, ensuring children receive more individualised attention and support throughout their early development.
Roosters
3 years – 5 years
Sixteen children per day with a 1:8 ratio. Our preschool group focuses on school readiness and independence while keeping play at the heart of everything we do. We balance planned activities with child-led exploration to inspire curiosity and growth.

A Typical Day at
Hailes Barn…
Morning Welcome
Children arrive to a warm welcome from familiar faces, helping them settle into the day with comfort and confidence. Our small group sizes mean strong bonds and gentle transitions.
Snack and Circle Time
We enjoy a healthy snack and spend time together in a short group session, which may include singing, stories, or exploring the day’s theme — always adapted to suit the children’s interests and stage of learning.
Outdoor Activities
Time outside is a big part of our day, with each group exploring nature in ways that suit their age and curiosity — from tiny hands discovering textures to confident climbers building dens and friendships.
In- the- Moment
Play & Activities
In each group, children are encouraged to explore, investigate, and imagine through play. Our team tunes into what sparks each child’s interest, following their lead with activities that support learning and development in meaningful, playful ways.
Lunchtime
Children and practitioners come together to enjoy nourishing food, develop independence, and practice social skills — supported by familiar staff who know their preferences and needs.
Rest and Recharge
Depending on the child and the group, the day includes restful moments — from naps to calm play and story time — giving each child space to recharge in their own way.
Afternoon Exploration
The afternoon invites further play and discovery, often building on what has captured the children’s attention earlier. Activities are paced to support both energy levels and interests.
Home Time
As the day winds down, we offer calming activities and reflect on our adventures, ready to share happy moments with families at pick-up.
